Children/Youth Ministries

This past week has been crunch time for me! Four weeks from today will be Camp Genesis at Samish Island Campgrounds. Camp Genesis is a weekend church camp for 3rd & 4th graders that I have the privilege of directing. This will be my second year in charge of this camp.

I must say though that I am not nearly as prepared mentally for it as I was last year. Not really sure why. Though, even though I am not nearly as mentally prepared the good Lord has definitely been watching over it. I have had 2 staff members that needed to back out within the past 2 weeks but, thankfully, had those positions filled immediately. Furthermore, I have also been notified of several kids coming to camp. Last year we had 15 and there is a good chance we could go beyond that this year. I have a great staff lined up who love working with children!

As I was contemplating the camp this past week I was reminded about how passionate I am about youth/children ministry. I think it stems from me growing up going to youth camps. I always looked up to my counselors, camp pastors, cooks, director, nurse, etc. Even today, having really good friendships with many of them.

In addition to Camp Genesis, I will also be counseling for the 5th consecutive summer at Camp Mungai. Mungai is for 5th and 6th graders and unlike Genesis, it is a whole week. It is very humbling to think that maybe, just maybe, I could have some sort of an impact on the lives of these children of God.

In response to my passion for youth/children ministries I have posted some videos below that, to me, say so much. They all have a strong message. The first one, “I Hope”, is a song by the Dixie Chicks. I first heard this song on a telethon for hurricane Katrina victims. I was so touched with the message that it sends to the world. Furthermore, the wake up call it sends to the world. Now, if only the world would listen. Last year at Camp Mungai I was the Camp Pastor. I played this song at the communion worship for the staff before camp officially started. I wanted it to be a reminder for us of the example that we are to set. The next song, “God Bless the Child”, is by Shania Twain. This song came out about 10-12 years ago but it is one that is just as relevant today. It continues to resonate deep within me an urgency to help stop the crimes committed towards those that are too young to stand up for themselves. And the last song is “Children of the World” by Amy Grant. I simply picked it because it is a song I remember from my childhood as being an anthem for children everywhere.
