Cooking = Worship?

Posted by samishpatrol on June 23, 2008

Like I previously posted, I am up at Samish Island Campgrounds cooking for a Zen Meditation Camp. This is one of the few weeklong camps that I help out at or attend that includes a Sunday morning. Most start on Sunday evening and end on Saturday morning. On camps that I am staff on I usually come a day early for staff meetings but even then then we usually have a worship on Sunday morning. Since I was cooking on Sunday Morning this past weekend I couldn’t go to church.

I started my work by selecting some music for us to listen to while cooking. For the most part, I have been playing Mix CD’s (country, pop, rock, hip-hop, etc.) that I made on my computer. Though, since it was Sunday morning I decided to play a Chris Rice (one of my top 2 favorite Christian music singer) CD and then one by Michael W. Smith. While preparing the breakfast meal and listening to Inspirational music I experienced worship. Sometimes it is very easy to get caught up in a narrowly defined view of worship though it is important to remember that worship comes in many forms and is often times more than just sitting in a pew in a building at the 11 o’clock hour once a week. Opportunities for worship is happening all around us, we just need to be aware of it.

One of my favorite Chris Rice songs - “Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus)”:

Back at Samish!

I got confirmation on Wednesday that they would need me to help cook at Samish Island Campgrounds for a Zen Meditation Camp. The group arrived this evening and are here until Saturday, July 28th. What is so cool is that I get paid to cook for this camp! You don’t get paid to cook for our church camps but when outside groups use the campgrounds you get paid. This opportunity couldn’t have come at a more perfect time! I needed the money to pay for our church family camp in two weeks and some other miscellaneous bills and now that will all be taken care of. I will be assisting some good friend, Laura & Jim Fish, in the cooking this week.

This is one of my favorite groups to cook for! I like it for two reasons. One, it is all vegetarian food and we do some really different and peculiar meals. It is fun to try the different food. I also like cooking for this group because they meet in silence for the whole week and that starts to rub off on your until you feel like you are meeting in silence as well. I find it to be a very spiritual week!
